About the Text — “Riders to the Sea”
“Riders to the Sea” (1904) is a one-act tragedy written by J. M. Synge. It is set on the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland, where people depend on the sea for their livelihood but also fear it as a destroyer.

The play tells the story of Maurya, an old mother who has lost all her sons to the sea. Her last remaining son, Bartley, also goes to sea despite her warnings — and dies in a drowning accident. Finally, Maurya accepts her fate calmly, saying that now the sea can do no more harm to her, for it has taken all her sons.
