HS 4th Semester ONE SHOT Revision Suggestion: Verse
Substance of the Poem: “The Greenhouse Effect”
The poem “The Greenhouse Effect” by Carl Dennis describes the scary future of our world due to global warming. Because of the greenhouse effect, the Earth’s temperature is rising. The poet predicts that green lands will turn into dry deserts, and the ice in the North and South Poles will melt. As a result, the places where we grow food (grain belts) will shift toward the poles.
In this future, life will be very different. The powerful and rich nations of today will face poverty and decline. They will lose their status because they have damaged the environment the most. There will be no personal cars; people will have to walk or use trolleys. Every piece of land will be precious. People will grow vegetables on their front lawns just to survive. Since the government will have no money (small tax base), citizens must give volunteer services to maintain buildings and roads.
The most painful part is that even though the future is so horrible, people are indifferent (don’t care). They are busy enjoying music and life as if nothing is wrong. The poet warns us to be prepared for this new reality and work together to survive.

Substance of the Poem: “Hawk Roosting”
In the poem “Hawk Roosting,” the Hawk is the speaker. It sits on the top of a tree with its eyes closed. Although it looks still, it is actually planning how to kill its prey. There are no “falsifying dreams” in its mind. It only thinks about its hooked beak and hooked feet, which are its weapons.
The hawk feels very proud and powerful. It thinks that the whole Universe took a long time to create it. Now, the hawk believes it holds the creation in its feet. The high trees, the blowing air, and the bright sun are all its advantages. The Earth’s face is turned upward just for the hawk’s inspection.
The hawk is a symbol of absolute power and dictatorship. It does not believe in arguments or mercy. It kills whenever it wants because everything belongs to it. It kills its prey directly and violently, often tearing off their heads. There is no guilt or pity in its heart. The hawk says that nothing has changed since it was born, and it will keep things exactly as they are in the future.
